Moorilla Estate

Moorilla Estate, nestled in the picturesque suburb of Berriedale just 12 km north of Hobart, Tasmania, is a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts. This historic winery, established in 1958, offers a unique blend of wine, art, and culture that sets it apart from other vineyards.

History and Significance

Moorilla Estate holds the distinction of being the second winery established in Tasmania during the 20th century. Founded by Italian-Australian textile merchant Claudio Alcorso, it has played a pivotal role in shaping Tasmania's wine industry. In 1995, the estate was acquired by David Walsh, a Tasmanian entrepreneur and art collector, who has since transformed it into a world-class destination.

Winemaking and Vineyards

Moorilla Estate specializes in producing cool-climate wines that reflect the unique terroir of Tasmania. The winery sources its grapes from two vineyards:

1. The estate vineyard in Berriedale

2. St Matthias Vineyard in the Tamar Valley

Under the guidance of winemaker Conor van der Reest, Moorilla produces around 160 tonnes of wine annually. The estate is particularly renowned for its textural wines and sparkling varieties.

Wine Tasting Experience

Wine lovers can indulge in a tasting experience at the cellar door, located in the Ether building at MONA. Open Friday to Monday from 12 pm to 5 pm, the cellar door offers a curated selection of Moorilla's finest wines. For a more immersive experience, visitors can opt for the "Moorilla Decanted" tour, which includes a private guided vineyard tour and tasting.

Museum of Old and New Art (MONA)

One of the most unique aspects of Moorilla Estate is its connection to MONA, Australia's largest private museum. Founded by David Walsh, MONA houses an eclectic collection of ancient and contemporary art. The combination of world-class wine and thought-provoking art creates an unparalleled visitor experience.

Dining Options

Moorilla Estate offers several dining experiences to complement its wines:

  • The Source Restaurant: A one-hatted restaurant featuring an award-winning 90-page wine list

  • Faro: A European-inspired bar with share plates and works by renowned light artist James Turrell

  • Moorilla Wine Bar: Offers seasonal treats and share plates paired with Moorilla and Domaine A wines

  • Museum Café: Perfect for a quick coffee and snack

Accommodation

For those looking to extend their visit, Moorilla Estate offers luxury accommodation in the form of MONA Pavilions. These high-tech, art-filled pavilions provide stunning views of the Derwent River and include access to MONA and a complimentary Moorilla wine tasting.

Moo Brew

In addition to its wines, Moorilla Estate is home to Moo Brew, a craft brewery that produces a range of beers. While brewing now takes place off-site, visitors can still enjoy Moo Brew's creations at the estate.

Best Time to Visit

While Moorilla Estate is beautiful year-round, summer and autumn offer long, warm days ideal for exploring the vineyards and enjoying outdoor tastings.

Moorilla Estate offers wine lovers a truly unique experience that goes beyond typical cellar door tastings. With its combination of premium cool-climate wines, world-class art, gourmet dining, and luxury accommodation, it stands as a testament to Tasmania's flourishing wine scene and cultural offerings.
