Mountadam Vineyards

Nestled in the picturesque Eden Valley region of South Australia, Mountadam Vineyards stands as an iconic family-owned winery with a rich history and a commitment to producing exceptional cool-climate wines. Located in the High Eden sub-region, this winery offers wine enthusiasts a unique experience that combines stunning views, exceptional wines, and a deep connection to the land.

Location and Climate

Mountadam Vineyards is situated approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes from Adelaide, or just 20 minutes from the larger Barossa Valley towns of Angaston and Tanunda. The winery's elevation of 550 meters above sea level provides a cool climate that is crucial for producing elegant and powerful wines. This high altitude results in:

  • Little to no rain during the critical ripening period

  • Cool evenings that preserve delicate grape flavors

  • A continental climate with warm sunny days

History and Heritage

Founded in 1972 by the late David Wynn, a visionary in the Australian wine industry, Mountadam Vineyards has a storied past:

  • David Wynn carefully selected the site after an exhaustive search throughout South Eastern Australia

  • The property was chosen for its stable climate, cool temperatures, and well-drained soils

  • In 2005, David and Jenni Brown purchased the winery, continuing the legacy

  • The Browns have since reassembled the original Mountadam property, now spanning over 1,000 hectares

Vineyards and Terroir

Mountadam's vineyards offer a diverse array of microclimates and geological formations:

  • 148 hectares of vineyards

  • Shallow soils over base rock provide perfect drainage

  • Various sites cling to hillsides and high valleys

  • The complex terroir allows winemakers to craft wines with depth and character
