Location and Terroir

Hochkirch vineyard is situated on a north-facing slope, 250 meters above sea level, along an elevated plateau running southwest from Dunkeld. The vineyard benefits from:

  • Gently undulating terrain with stunning views of the Grampians to the north

  • Red-brown basalt loam soil over stony gravel, transitioning to clay at depth

  • A cool climate with ample spring and summer rainfall, similar to Burgundy

Vineyard and Farming Practices

Biodynamic Certification

Hochkirch Wines has been Demeter certified since 2003, employing biodynamic farming methods across their entire 700-acre property.

Vineyard Characteristics
  • 20 acres of vines, part of a larger integrated farm

  • High-density planting (5,000-6,000 vines per hectare)

  • Unirrigated vines on own roots (no rootstocks)

  • Manual cane pruning and strict yield control

Grape Varieties

The winery focuses on cool-climate varieties, including:

  • Pinot Noir (4.5 hectares)

  • Riesling (1.5 hectares)

  • Cabernet Sauvignon (1 hectare)

  • Semillon and Shiraz (0.5 hectares each)

  • Small plantings of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc
